What’s Open In Gore Region in the Winter?

Recreation in the Town of Johnsburg

What’s open in wintertime in the Gore Region?

The short answer? Just about everything. Johnsburg is a year-round destination, along with being home to approximately 2,400 permanent residents. Unlike some Adirondack towns that go into semi-hibernation in the winter months due to a decrease in tourism, Johnsburg continues to flourish, thanks to cold-weather attractions like Gore Mountain. We’re giving you a quick rundown of a few Johnsburg hotspots to visit when the temperature drops.

Gore Mountain

Gore Mountain takes center stage in Gore Region in the winter months! Located in North Creek, Gore Mountain boasts 4 peaks, 110 trails, 14 lifts – including their eight-passenger Northwoods Gondola and two high-speed quads – and has made a slew of recent improvements to make your experience on its slopes even better. Be sure to check out their snow reports and take a look at their trail map to help plan your visit. And if you’re considering a longer getaway, Gore has lots to offer for a fun-filled and relaxing winter vacation.

Since 1934, Gore Mountain’s base camp has been nestled in North Creek Ski Bowl. The Ski Bowl contains the Mt. Ski Center with the Village Slope, 46er Chairlift, Snow Tubing, Ice Skating, and Cross Country Ski Trails. The Ski Bowl is also the terminus of backcountry ski trails originating from Barton Mines Road.

Gore has six dining options in different locations across the mountain, and its Nordic Center and Village Slopes at the North Creek Ski Bowl are lit in the evenings so the fun can continue when the sun goes down!

Most Gore Region shops remain open year-round. Some may have shortened or alternate hours of operation though, so checking out individual businesses’ websites or Facebook pages ahead of time to confirm their hours is a good idea before heading up for a visit. But, you definitely don’t want to overlook these unique small businesses when it’s time to do your holiday shopping, or if you’re looking for a pick-me-up to break out of the winter doldrums.

Barkeater Chocolates is the perfect spot to grab a treat for yourself or find a great gift for the hard-to-shop-for folks on your list. Hudson River Trading Company is a North Creek staple offering furnishings, lighting, and decor, along with clothing and accessories. And, be sure to stop by Poiema, a gift shop and boutique full of character, where you’re sure to find something special.

Garnet Hill Lodge

The Garnett Hill Lodge is another can’t miss Gore Region destination for winter getaways and outdoor recreation. Enjoy comfortable accommodations at its charmingly rustic historic log house, and delicious, locally-sourced meals at the Log House Restaurant and Pub. During the holiday season, they offer promotional packages so visitors can experience the magic of celebrating the winter holidays in the Adirondacks.

Garnett Hill Lodge is also home to a premier Nordic ski center. All stays during ski season enable guests to have full access to the resort and ski center, and include trail passes, snowshoe rentals, and a hearty breakfast to fuel your winter adventures.

Great dining isn’t just for warm weather in Gore Region. Johnsburg’s restaurants, cafes, and delis have plenty to satisfy almost any appetite during the winter months. Local favorites like Cafe Sarah, Marsha’s Family Restaurant, Izzy’s Market & Deli, Chrissy’s Cafe, or the Full Belly Deli are open for breakfast and lunch, serving everything from fresh-baked pastries and signature espresso drinks to breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, and omelets.

When dinner time rolls around, the German-inspired menu at Beck’s Tavern or Basil & Wick’s creative take on traditional American and Adirondack comfort food have you covered. And afterward, you can grab a drink at the Barking Spider or Bar Vino.
