Johnsburg Holiday Traditions

The Town of Johnsburg is a close-knit community with many families having lived in the region for generations. But, whether you’re a longtime Johnsburg resident, a more recent transplant, or a seasonal visitor, there are plenty of holiday traditions and activities to enjoy during the winter months.

We checked in with locals to learn more about their favorite things about the holiday season in their hometown, and we’re sharing here so you can join in and make your own Gore region holiday memories!

Community Celebrations

The winter holiday season in Gore Region is all about gathering with friends, family, and neighbors to enjoy each other’s company. Fortunately, Johnsburg offers lots of great opportunities to celebrate as a community.

Lights On in Johnsburg NY is a month-long celebration featuring two back-to-back weekends of activities and additional scheduled events. Some highlights include a Christmas parade, Christmas bazaar, ski gear swap to give locals (especially kids) access to affordable gear, a food drive for locals in need, appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus, a community tree lighting, and the annual holiday concert at Tannery Pond Community Center. Take a peek at the Lights On In Johnsburg NY Facebook page for more information.

Attending Johnsburg Central School events is also a favorite holiday tradition for many Gore Region residents. The holiday concerts put on by the school’s band and chorus are full of festive spirit and showcase the region’s talented students.

Elderwood at North Creek is an assisted living facility that is home to many local seniors. Area residents make a point to include visits to Elderwood in their holiday plans, whether to sing carols, enjoy Christmas Dinner with loved ones, or stopping by to chat with the residents and share some holiday cheer.

Holiday Shopping on Main Street

Main Street in North Creek is the perfect spot to find unique gifts for everyone on your list, and shopping there is a great way to support local businesses and artisans.

Gore Region residents shared how much they enjoy spending time browsing through shops like Hudson River Trading Co., Poiema, the Vault, and more for great gifting finds.

And, if you need a place to rest your head after a long day of shopping, be sure to check out the charming Alpine Lodge, conveniently located right on Main Street in North Creek.

Outdoor Fun

You can’t beat Gore Mountain for winter outdoor recreation. Whether it’s to get the kids outside to burn off some the excitement of waiting for Santa’s arrival or to show off a regional gem to your holiday guests, a trip – or several – to Gore Mountain is a wintertime must.

Locals also told us of fond recollections they have of searching for just the right Christmas tree to cut down. That fresh-cut pine tree fragrance is well worth the daily ritual of cleaning up piles of pine needles!

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry!

Johnsburg is chock full of fabulous places to treat yourself to delicious food and drink during the holiday season, and all year ‘round. We were given an insider tip to stop by Café Sarah to try some of Mrs. Murtagh’s famous rum balls, and you can pick up homemade pies and cookies for your holiday gatherings while you’re there.

Barkeater Chocolates is another can’t miss stop for sweets and treats in Gore Region, and their offerings make great gifts, too.

We’ve also heard rave reviews of the special holiday events at Garnet Hill Lodge, such as their New Year’s Eve Dinner. Visitors to Garnet Hill Lodge can enjoy top-notch meals, outdoor recreation, and comfortable overnight accommodations all in the same spot.
