Stroll the streets of North Creek and get the pulse of the town. North Creek is the main hub of Johnsburg, where many of the town’s businesses, cultural centers and trail systems can be found. Want to mountain bike or night ski, go to a chocolate factory, catch a ski flick, eat tapas and have a beer with the locals all in one day? North Creek is where it’s at!
Wait a minute, a Johnsburg inside another Johnsburg!? That’s right, the small hamlet of Johnsburg exists within the larger Town of Johnsburg. Johnsburg’s claim to fame isn’t just confusing drivers and GPS systems, it’s also home to some of the most stunning views of the Southern Adirondacks. Gain some altitude and go rock climbing and hiking on Crane Mountain or drop a fishing line into Garnet Lake. Whatever path you take in Johnsburg is sure to be a beautiful one.
Bakers Mills runs adjacent to the rugged and protected Siamese Ponds Wilderness Area and is the perfect base camp for a trip into the heart of the Adirondacks. Backpack or canoe into a secluded lean-to for a night of serene and uninterrupted wilderness. Then ease yourself back into civilization with a night of glamping and gourmet dining. The perfect weekend?
As the name implies, North River is all about water. Home to the Whitewater Derby, North River is centered around the Hudson River. Hop in a raft, kayak or tube and hit the rapids, then rail bike back along the riverbank! North River also has miles of mountain bike and cross-country ski trails, camping, hiking, a public boat launch and beach at 13th Lake.
Riparius is the eastern most hamlet in the town of Johnsburg. It’s tiny but the mighty Hudson River flows straight through it. Public river access makes Riparius the perfect place to hone your whitewater kayaking skills or watch the pros do it during the Whitewater Derby.
Take the plunge into Wevertown– home of the locals’ favorite swimming spot, The Black Hole! The Black Hole has the perfect cliff to perfect your back flip, and a mellow pool to float in if that’s more your speed. Head to the deli after your dip for a freshly made sandwich and maybe grab a six pack for later. It’s a vacation after all.
